Mother haunted by son’s unsolved death

On Feb. 23, 1990, Phillip Alexander, 18, of Wareham disappeared into the Myles Standish Forest with four friends for a drinking party. Three months later, his badly decomposed body was discovered in a latrine at Camp Squanto near the forest, about six miles from where he was last seen.

Despite two grand juries hearing evidence about the circumstances from the four men who were with Mr. Alexander, there have been no indictments, no charges brought and no exact cause of death determined.

NOW Although the case technically remains open, Pearl Alexander, the victim’s mother, said she hasn’t heard from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office in about three years.

But the mystery haunts her.

“It just doesn’t go away,” Mrs. Alexander said of her son’s memory.

She said she still dreams about her boy, thinks she hears his voice now and again and visits his grave regularly.

“It’s just something you can’t let go,” she said.

February marks the six-year anniversary of Mr. Alexander’s mysterious death. His mother said she’s losing hope that she will ever learn the circumstances that led to her son’s death. Was it homicide or just an awful tragedy? In the days immediately following the disappearance, temperatures dipped below freezing and 6 inches of snow fell, hampering the efforts of 80 searchers.

Mrs. Alexander is convinced that one of the four friends who went into the woods with Mr. Alexander knows what happened. She said she hopes that someday she, too, will learn the truth,

Months after Mr. Alexander’s body was found, his girlfriend gave birth to his son.

Now, 5-year-old Christopher Baker asks about his father, Mrs. Alexander said.

“I don’t have the answers for him,” his grandmother said. But the boy offers her a small piece of her son, she said.

“It’s a part of Phillip.”
